Will CBS’ ‘The Code’ Have A Season 2? Renewal, Cancellation Details

UPDATE: July 23, 9:30 p.m. EDT -- One day after the Season 1 finale of “The Code” aired on CBS, stars of the military legal drama revealed on Twitter that the show’s been canceled, making last night’s episode also the series finale.

Luke Mitchell, who played Captain John 'Abe' Abraham, wrote: “Unfortunately it’s true... @TheCodeCBS has come to an end and while I’m disappointed that I don’t get to continue this particular adventure with these stellar humans, I feel very grateful for, and proud of, the show we made. Thank you so much to everyone who watched!”

His co-star, Dana Delaney (Colonel Glenn Turnbull), also tweeted about the cancellation.

“Thank you to all you wonderful people who watched @TheCodeCBS. Last night was our finale and sadly, no more,” she wrote about CBS’ decision not to renew the drama. “I’ll never make General. But I loved this cast of stellar actors & know we’ll meet again. Semper Fidelis.”

Original story: Season 1 of CBS’ “The Code” comes to an end tonight with episode 12, titled “Legit Bad Day,” but will that mean it’s case closed for the show, or will it get a Season 2 renewal?

While the network hasn’t yet announced its decision about whether the show will be canceled or renewed, the ratings for the military legal drama give some insight into which direction CBS might go in.

The show started off strong with its premiere episode in April earning a 0.73 rating in the key 18-49 demo and 8.13 million viewers total, according to TV Series Finale, but those numbers have come way down since then. Just one week later, the demo went down to a 0.53 rating and total viewers down to 4.45 million.

Most recently, when the ratings should have been improving because the Season 1 finale was nearing, they did not. Both the July 1 and July 8 episodes had a 0.41 rating and about 3.92 million total viewers. Last week, the penultimate episode had the lowest ratings yet, with a 0.3 in the demo and 3.25 million total viewers.

As the numbers for the show have been jumping all over the place the last few months, CBS could decide to give it another chance with another season, but the network could also choose to simply go by the overall decline in the ratings and cut its losses and cancel the show.

As it’s a spring/summer series, CBS has quite a bit of time until the show would potentially return with new episodes, meaning the network might take a bit of time to mull over its decision. Or it’s possible the decision is just being held until after the Season 1 finale of “The Code” tonight, in order to not give fans a reason to opt out of watching it.

For those who do plan on checking out the finale Monday night, which was written and directed by Craig Sweeny, here’s what it’s all about, according to the official synopsis:

“Abe’s [Luke Mitchell] colleagues must defend – and reluctantly prosecute – him when he is arrested and court-martialed for mutiny in regard to a 2010 mission in Afghanistan where he was one of the only survivors.”

Aside from Mitchell, the show’s cast also includes Anna Wood (Capt. Maya Dobbins), Ato Essandoh (Major Trey Ferry), Dana Delany (Col. Glenn Turnbull), Phillipa Soo (Lt. Harper Li) and Raffi Barsoumian (Warrant Officer Rami Ahmadi).

Fans have also been getting to see Derek Klena (Adam Turnbull), De’Adre Aziza (Nona Ferry), Aaron Tveit (Matt Dobbins), Tawny Cypress (Lt. Col. Edina Corpus) and Sherman Howard (Gen. Geiger) as recurring players on “The Code” this season.
