“Death Stranding” creator Hideo Kojima is attending this year’s event. Mexican film director and one of the cast members of the upcoming game, Guillermo del Toro, is also making an appearance. Could this mean that a new trailer or a major update about the game’s development could be showcased at the event as well?

This weekend, the organizers of The Game Awards took to social media to announce the confirmed attendance of Kojima of “Metal Gear” fame and del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Hellboy”) at the big event. Both are scheduled to appear on Thursday, Dec. 7, as presenters based on the tweets posted on The Game Awards Twitter page.

“We are so thrilled to announce our next presenter for Thursday night: Hideo Kojima! The legendary game director will once again appear at #TheGameAwards,” read the tweet about Kojima’s attendance. Meanwhile, the post about del Toro simply stated: “Presenter announcement: Don’t miss Guillermo del Toro live @thegameawards on Thursday night!”

The confirmation that Kojima and del Toro are coming to the award show has led DualShockers to speculate that a new material about the upcoming game could be shown at the event. It is already a known fact that the two are collaborating on “Death Stranding.” While Kojima has the directorial control over the project, del Toro has since insisted that his part only involved acting and that he is, in no way, participating creatively regarding the decisions for the game.

At the start of this year, del Toro set the record straight by telling IGN: “I’m involved as a character. Kojima-san called me and said, ‘I want you to be a character in the game,’ and I said, ‘Gladly.’ He’s discussed his ideas so I could understand the character, but other than that I’m not involved, creatively, at all.”

The speculation that a new trailer or a major announcement about “Death Stranding” could debut at The Game Awards 2017 is inevitable though Kojima and del Toro are just attending as award presenters. After Kojima announced “Death Stranding” at PlayStation’s E3 conference in 2016, he showcased a second trailer for the project at The Game Awards last year.

Fans are voicing their excitement over the possibility that a “Death Stranding” update could happen next week. “Ohh yesss!! DS gameplay trailer with the female character reveal for sure! Maybe a playable demo available that night?? One can dream right?? :D please make it come true!!” Twitter user @Navaid_22 wrote.

It’s possible that a gameplay trailer could be showcased at this year’s Game Awards. After all, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America Shawn Layden said back in June that “we shouldn’t have to wait too long to get our first tease of the title in action.”

“Death Stranding” is Kojima’s first project after exiting Konami. The title is being published by Sony and it will apparently be a PS4-exclusive game. There’s no official release date yet, but it will most probably arrive in 2019. Apart from del Toro, other confirmed cast members are “Walking Dead” star Norman Reedus and “Hannibal” actor Mads Mikkelsen.
