Will Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s Baby Have A UK Or US Passport?
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their first child in the spring of 2019. Royal fans are wondering if their baby will be issued the UK or US passport since Markle is an American.
Kara Godfrey, a journalist for Express, revealed that since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s baby will most likely be born in the UK, he or she will be issued a UK passport and will be a British citizen.
A lawyer also told the Huffington Post, “If the child is born in Britain, it will automatically be a British citizen, as Harry is British. However, the child could claim dual citizenship later in life and receive a US passport alongside their UK passport.”
In order to claim citizenship of a country, the person must have citizenship through at least two generations, which typically comes from the mother and grandmother or the father and grandfather. However, there are also some issues when it comes to getting dual citizenship.
“As a dual national, you can’t get diplomatic help from the British government when you are in the other country where you hold citizenship. For example, if you hold both British and Chinese citizenship, you can’t get diplomatic help from the UK when you’re in China,” the UK government said.
Meanwhile, Markle moved to the UK from the US after she got engaged to Prince Harry last year. But she is still an American citizen. Despite being married to a member of the royal family, the “Suits” alum still has to follow the correct procedure before becoming a UK citizen. This includes answering test questions and having a certain amount of income.
In related news, Markle and Prince Harry also made headlines after it was reported that they will move out of Kensington Palace before their baby is born.
“The initial plan was for Harry and Meghan to move out of their cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace and into the main apartments. But there has been a bit of tension between the brothers,” a source said (via Express).
