Will ‘The Politician’ Return For Season 2? Renewal, Cancellation Details
Ryan Murphy fans have likely already binged Netflix’s “The Politician” Season 1, and now the question is when they’ll get more. The black comedy ends with a cliffhanger that makes it clear Payton’s story isn’t over. So will Netflix renew the series for Season 2?
Luckily, this is a rare occasion where audiences don’t have to wait for an answer about renewal or cancellation. “The Politician” was renewed for Season 2 before Season 1 even aired. Netflix ordered two seasons when they picked up the series.
That’s just the beginning for this show. Murphy, the show’s creator, confirmed told the Hollywood Reporter that he initially conceived “The Politician” as a five-season series. Each season is set to follow an important election on Payton’s (Ben Platt) path to the presidency.
“It’s not a show on current U.S. politics,” Platt told THR. “It’s more about the phenomenon of what it takes to be a politician and how much of yourself you have to sacrifice to be a good one.”
The end of Season 1 clearly set up the Season 2 election. The finale pushed the series forward three years. Payton is running for New York State Senate against incumbent Dede Standish (Judith Light). She’ll be his main adversary in the sophomore season.
“I get to go toe-to-toe with Judith, which, since she’s one of my favorite actors and human beings, that’s been incredibly exciting professionally,” Platt told TheWrap.
The actor also revealed that shooting will move from California to New York City. Filming is expected to start in October. That will likely keep “The Politician” on track to drop Season 2 around the same time next year.
