A woman in China turned up on a date with nearly two dozen relatives to test her prospective boyfriend’s generosity but the plan backfired.

The incident took place in East China’s Zhejiang Province. The unidentified woman allegedly brought her 23 family members to a candle-light dinner that she was supposed to enjoy only with her date. The man, who was uninformed about the other invitees, was shocked to find the final bill amount which totaled $2,968.60 (19,800 Chinese yuan), according to the Chinese daily Global Times.

The 29-year-old man, identified only by his surname Liu, had initially offered to pay the bill assuming it would just be two of them but fled the restaurant upon receiving the final bill, leaving the woman to pay. The relatives also refused when the woman asked them to split the bill, adding to her misery.

The date was set up by Liu’s mother who had grown worried after he had been single for a while, according to local newspaper Taizhou Evening News.

Local reports state that the woman was later able to contact Liu and managed to coax him into paying a small portion of the bill, but she and the relatives involved had to take care of the rest of the bill.

The incident renewed the longstanding debate on Chinese social media over who would foot the bill. "Men should pay out of courtesy. But bring 23 people to the meal is unacceptable," one user wrote in the comments on social media, according to Ladbible.

"If they like each other after the date, then the man should pay. If not, they should go Dutch," wrote another.

"Usually the woman would bring one or two friends in case it gets awkward. We as gentlemen should pay. If the woman brings seven or eight people, you should just leave. She wasn't genuine anyway," a comment read, according to the outlet.
