In a shocking incident, a woman was dragged out of her home and paraded naked for allegedly having an extra-marital relationship.
The gruesome attack happened in a tribal village in the Indian state of West Bengal Thursday, reported NDTV.
The incident that was caught on camera, had gone viral, following which the police were alerted. While three people have been arrested, eight others are still at large.
The victim, whose identity has not been revealed, allegedly left her husband for another man some six months ago. However, she returned to her marital home last Wednesday. On her return, a Kangaroo Court, headed by village elders, allegedly decided to "punish" the woman for "leaving her husband for another man."
Kangaroo Court is an unofficial court held by a group of people to try a suspect as guilty of a crime or misdemeanor, especially without good evidence.
Following this, some local people barged into the woman's home, dragged her out, stripped and forced her to march through the village, all the while hurling abuses at her.
The woman was seen in the video wailing and screaming "beat me as much as you can," The Indian Express reported.
After the incident, the victim left her husband's home for Assam, a northeastern state of India -- her home state. Nobody alerted the police about the incident until the video began to circulate Sunday.
Police officials traced the woman and counseled her after the video clip surfaced. It was then that she decided to file a complaint. In the presence of her husband, she named every single man who assaulted her. Charges, including the attempt to murder, were filed against the suspects.
However, police sources told NDTV that the Kangaroo Court was not responsible for the attack and no such decision was taken by it. Rather, it was some men from her tribe who took it upon themselves to "punish the woman," police said.
"Some vested groups with mischievous intentions are misrepresenting the incident. Legal steps are being taken against them separately," police told the publication.
Such human rights violations continue to report in tribal villages in India. In March, a minor girl was brutally beaten and tied up with her rapist, before being paraded through the village. The disturbing video of the incident that happened in the state of Madhya Pradesh went viral soon. Police arrested six men, including her brothers and the rapist, in connection with the incident.
