A woman was arrested after she poisoned her newborn granddaughter to death because she did not like her son-in-law. The incident took place in Sagamu town in Nigeria on Thursday.

Police responded to a home after receiving a report that a baby left in the care of 42-year-old Temitope Akinola by the girl’s mother was found dead. The newborn’s unidentified mother told the responding officers that she left the baby in her mother’s care and went for a bath. When she returned, she found her two-day-old baby lying motionless.

The officers immediately detained Akinola for questioning. During interrogation, the accused told the officers she poisoned her granddaughter with a deadly insecticide because she did not like the father of the baby.

“She confessed further that she had attempted to terminate the pregnancy, but her pastor had warned her against it, hence she waited for her daughter to deliver before carrying out her devilish intention. She explained further that she poisoned the baby with a deadly insecticide known as Sniper,” police officer Okiki Agunbiade said.

“The corpse of the baby has been deposited at Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy. The suspect has been transferred to homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and prosecution,” he added.
