A man in India suffered severe burns after his irate wife poured hot oil on his face for coming back home late from work.

Shivkumari Ahirwar and her husband, 38-year-old Arvind Ahirwar, quarreled frequently as the latter often returned home late from work. The couple got into one such argument Tuesday which ended up with Shivkumari pouring boiling oil on Arvind’s face while he was asleep. The incident took place at their home in the northern state of Madhya Pradesh.

Hearing the victim’s screams, the family members rushed to the couple’s room and took him to a nearby hospital for treatment. Doctors said the man had suffered "severe" burn injuries.

The victim’s brother told local daily The Times of India that the couple, who had been married for close to three years, had an argument Monday night. The victim’s parents intervened and controlled the situation. However, the woman, who was still fuming, entered the room around 5 a.m. Tuesday and poured hot oil on the sleeping man’s face. He added that the accused has expressed regret over the act.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against Shivkumari.

"We went to the spot after receiving the victim’s complaint. They had an argument over returning late from work. She took the violent step in the morning when the whole family was sleeping," a police officer told the newspaper.

The victim was receiving treatment at the hospital as of Wednesday. The charges levied against the woman were not known.

The incident comes weeks after a woman in the same state killed her five-month-old son by setting him ablaze following an argument with her husband. An argument broke out between 24-year-old Guddi Singh and her husband over some petty issue. Following the altercation, the husband left for work, leaving the woman and the child alone at home. The accused wrapped the infant in a cloth and lit it, killing the baby on the spot. The woman was taken into custody and charged under relevant sections of the law.
