'Zoolander 2' Release Date Revealed By Ben Stiller And Owen Wilson At Paris Fashion Week Show
Ben Stiller has been talking on and off about “Zoolander 2” for several years. Now, with the movie all but a foregone conclusion, both he and buddy Owen Wilson reprised their characters to announce the sequel at a Paris Fashion Week show Tuesday.
It’s been almost 14 years since Hansel (Wilson) and Derek Zoolander (Stiller) appeared in the first film, centered on the life of male models turned super spies. The duo took the stage at Valentino’s recent show in Paris to walk the runway in some impressive new looks. According to E! Online (and a Valentino Instagram post), "Stiller, as Derek, wore a custom Night Butterflies brocade suit with hand-embroidered overcoat and black Creeper shoes. Wilson, as Hansel, modeled a Silk Continent print Pajama suit with Double Cashmere overcoat and Open sneakers."
While the fashion was what took center stage at the show, the big news from their appearance was the confirmation and release date for the highly anticipated sequel.
According to SlashFilm, Jennifer Aniston’s fiancé, actor Justin Theroux, has penned the script, and Stiller will direct. The film is scheduled to begin shooting in Rome later this year. Apparently, the story for the sequel has been around for quite some time. As early as 2011, Stiller was teasing details about how he wants the audience to catch up with Zoolander in the modern day.
“It’s 10 years later and most of it is set in Europe. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s basically Derek and Hansel 10 years later -- though the last movie ended on a happy note, a lot of things have happened in the meantime. Their lives have changed, and they’re not really relevant anymore. It’s a new world for them,” he said (via Splitsider).
Wilson’s involvement in the announcement confirms that the actor will reprise his role in the sequel. JoBlo.com reports comedic actor Will Ferrell will return as Mugatu. Entertainment Weekly broke the news that Christine Taylor will, once again, play Matilda Jeffries. Meanwhile, Deadline reports Penélope Cruz has signed on to play a yet unspecified role in the movie. In any case, everyone will only have to wait a little less than a year to see all of these really, really ridiculously good-looking people hit the big screen once again.
