BTS, YouTube Team Up For 'Permission To Dance' Challenge Starting Friday [Details]
KEY POINTS
- BTS will handpick their favorite fan submissions for a compilation video
- Fans may start uploading their videos from Friday
- The challenge is meant to "spread happiness," according to a YouTube executive
YouTube has partnered with K-pop global superstars BTS to promote its new video clips feature, Youtube shorts, via a 15-second dance challenge starting Friday.
BTS fans around the world can participate in the challenge, which will run from July 23 to Aug. 14, exclusively on YouTube Shorts.
As part of the challenge, global ARMY fans are invited to record a 15-second clip dancing to the group’s hit song, “Permission to Dance,” and upload it to the short videos section of YouTube. The dance moves for the challenge should include the international sign language gestures for the words “peace,” “dance” and “joy” that were used in the original music video, Variety reported.
BTS earlier released a teaser for the challenge.
Fans are also encouraged to become creative with their grooves as BTS will spotlight some of their favorite entries in a compilation video, Billboard reported.
Submissions should come with the hashtags #PermissiontoDance and #Shorts for them to be picked up for the compilation.
"'Permission to Dance' is a song that will get everyone's heart pumping and dancing again. We also prepared the 'Permission to Dance Challenge' with YouTube Shorts so please stay tuned for more,” BTS said in a statement, as cited by Billboard.
YouTube global head of music, Lyor Cohen, said the partnership is aimed at “spreading happiness” around the globe.
"BTS are global icons. Breaking record after record on YouTube, BTS' immense contribution to the world of music has made them an undeniable force," Cohen told Billbord. "We are humbled to be partnering with them on the Permission to Dance challenge on YouTube Shorts, helping to spread happiness and build lasting connections amongst their fans on YouTube across the globe. We are stoked to see the ARMY dance!"
The “Permission to Dance” challenge comes after the launch of YouTube Shorts – a “Tiktok” style short-form video feature that is now accessible in more than 100 countries worldwide.
“Permission to Dance” debuted at No. 1 at the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, replacing another BTS hit, “Butter,” which has fallen to the seventh spot after staying at the top of the chart.
“Just as ‘Permission to Dance’ sends the message that you don’t have to ask anyone for permission to dance, we hope that we can bring people all over the world together to dance along with us, free of any limits or constraints. We are very excited to watch this challenge come to life on YouTube Shorts and can’t wait to see what you all create,” Shin Young Jae, general manager of Big Hit Music, told Billboard.
