Camila Cabello Talks About Body Image Concerns After Spoiled Beach Trip: 'I Couldn't Relax'
Camila Cabello has opened up about body image and the pressure of having to maintain a certain body type as a celebrity after the paparazzi reportedly spoiled her Miami beach trip.
The 25-year-old "Havana" singer penned a lengthy post on Instagram Saturday, noting that she "didn't breathe" and held her core so tight that her abs "hurt" when she realized the paparazzi had trooped to the beach club where she was staying.
"I've worn bikinis that were too small and I paid no mind to how I looked and saw pictures online and comments and been so upset," she wrote. "I reminded myself when it impact my self-esteem that I was thinking the culture's thoughts and not my own. A culture [who] has gotten so used to an image of what a 'healthy' woman's body looks like that is completely not real for a lot of women."
"Photoshop, restrictive eating, overexercising and choosing angles that make our bodies look different than how they are in the moment and in their natural form, when we take a deep breath, when we eat a meal, when we allow the waves to tussle us around," Cabello added. "I remind myself of this: listen to podcasts on intuitive eating, follow women who accept their cellulite, stretch marks, bellies, bloating and weight fluctuations."
The singer also reflected on the pressure she felt to look her best because photographers were around to take photos of her as she donned a new bikini.
"I held my core so tight my abs hurt and didn't breathe and barely smiled and was so self-conscious of where the paps were the whole time I couldn't let go and I pretend they weren't there but I couldn't let and I couldn't relax and do what we're meant to do when we go out into the nature," she explained.
Cabello ended her post by telling fans she wanted to reconnect with her 7-year-old self who was "happy, silly, breathing, pretending to be a mermaid, FREE."
Her post, which has amassed more than a million likes as of Monday, has clearly resonated with a lot of people, including celebrities. Her friends in the industry even shared messages of support for the singer in the comments section.
"Emily in Paris" star Lily Collins wrote, "I feel you and am sending all the love and positive vibes your way."
Meanwhile, "Midnight Sun" actress Bella Thorne noted, "So well said."
It was not the first time Cabello has openly spoken up about body image. In July last year, the singer posted a video on TikTok in which she celebrated her "stretchmarks and fat."
"I am grateful for this body that lets me do what I need to do. We are real women with curves and cellulite and stretchmarks and fat. And we gotta own that, baby," she said, as per E! News.
