Shawn Mendes is opening up about some personal struggles he faced following his split from Camila Cabello.
On Friday, the "Treat You Better" crooner posted a video about his new music via Twitter and Instagram, explaining how his new lyrics reflect his real-life struggles after breaking up with Cabello four months ago.
"You don't realize when you're breaking up with someone … all the s— that comes after it," he said. "Which is like, who do I call when I am, like, in a panic attack, who do I call when I am, like, f—ing on the edge, you know?"
He continued, "I think that's the reality that kind of hit me. It's like, oh, I'm on my own now. Now I feel like finally, like, I'm actually on my own, and I hate that. That's my reality, you know?"
In November last year, Mendes and Cabello announced they had called it quits after two years of dating. They said at the time that they would "continue to be best friends."
Earlier this month, the former Fifth Harmony singer appeared to address her split from Mendes through her newest single, "Bam Bam," which features her singing about the ways in which life can change following a breakup.
"You said you hated the ocean/But you're surfin' now/I said I'd love you for life/But I just sold our house," Cabello sings in the opening lyrics.
Cabello sold her three-bedroom Los Angeles mansion in December 2021, according to People.
"I feel like the most powerful thing is to zoom into the super, super details of it, basically saying it without saying it," Cabello told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1's "New Music Daily" of her lyrics.
In the same month, Mendes admitted that he was having a "hard time" on social media while discussing his breakup ballad "It'll Be Okay" in a video for his Instagram followers.
Despite his struggles, he said in the clip that he was thankful to fans for connecting with his single and posting videos about it on social media, adding that his goal in making music is to "have some sort of my own truth revealed to me."
"A lot of the times when I'm writing songs, I'm usually using music as a platform to be able to get to a place inside of myself that I wouldn't be able to get to by just kind of talking to people or thinking about it," Mendes explained.
An unnamed source previously told E! News that it was Mendes who "initiated the conversation" about breaking up. According to the insider, the "Cinderella" star had been "very upset over the split" but ultimately "agreed" that it was for the best.
"It was really hard for a few days, but she has been spending a lot of time with friends and keeping busy," the insider added of Cabello. "She has a huge support system and is feeling renewed now."
Cabello and Mendes have remained amicable following their split. The former couple was even spotted together in Miami in January, walking their dog Tarzan in a park.
