Marvel Studios re-released “Avengers: Endgame” in theaters this weekend, throwing in a variety of extras after the credits and expanding the film back into over 2,000 theaters. Many viewed this as a move to push the film past “Avatar” as the highest-grossing film of all time, an accolade it has been tantalizingly close to achieving. So, did this move do the trick?

For the time being, it seems that “Endgame” will not be surpassing James Cameron’s 2009 epic. While the expanded re-release was enough to push the film back into the top 10 – moving from 13th to 7th place – its $5.5 million domestic haul wasn’t nearly enough to help it overtake “Avatar,” especially with foreign markets only scraping up $1.5 million in addition.

As of Monday, “Avengers: Endgame” is sitting at $2.761 billion worldwide, just shy of the $2.787 billion of “Avatar.” With a Blu-ray release already confirmed for Aug. 13, it’s looking highly unlikely that enough fans will continue to show up during its theatrical run to get it over the line.

Fans who once again made their way to theaters for the superhero mega-blockbuster were treated to several extras after the credits: a tribute to the late Stan Lee, an unfinished deleted scene, and a sneak peek at the upcoming “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Special posters were also handed out as a gift to dedicated fans.
“Avengers: Endgame” was initially released on April 26 where it shattered opening weekend records with a $357 million three-day haul.
