  • James Wan said "The Conjuring 3" will go beyond the haunted house setup
  • Wan said director Michael Chaves will provide a "fresh take" on the "Conjuring" universe
  • Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren in "The Devil Made Me Do It"

James Wan, the creator of the “Conjuring” universe, has revealed that the third movie in the horror franchise will be different from the first two because he wanted to take the series to a whole new level.

A video titled “Faith & Fear: The Conjuring Universe Behind The Scenes” that Warner Bros. recently released on YouTube teases new details about “The Conjuring 3.” In the video, Wan revealed that he wanted to go in a different direction from the usual haunted house setting and take the franchise to newer heights.

The director also noted that the third movie, titled “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” will explore certain territories that have never been touched before.

“I really wanted 'The Conjuring 3' to get away from the whole haunted house set-up of the first two 'Conjuring' films. It should be more on a whole different level, something that we've never explored before in the 'Conjuring' world,” Wan said in the clip.

This will be the first time that Wan won’t be sitting in the director’s chair for a “Conjuring” film. The “Insidious” helmer took a step back to concentrate on his upcoming horror movie, “Malignant.”

Michael Chaves will be directing the third film in the successful horror film series.

Speaking about the decision not to helm “Conjuring 3,” Wan said it was a “bittersweet” experience for him to let Chaves take the reins for the upcoming film.

“Working with Michael Chaves on 'La Llorona', I saw a filmmaker that really gets these kinds of films. It's bittersweet for me to pass the baton on, but it's good to get a fresh take on where we can take the Conjuring Universe,” Wan shared.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will be reprising the roles of Lorraine and Ed Warren in “The Devil Made Me Do It.”

The first two movies in the franchise garnered universal acclaim and were massively successful at the box office. The first part was released in 2013 and revived the horror genre with genuine scares. The film earned more than $319 million globally.

Meanwhile, the second movie came out in 2016 and made over $320 million worldwide.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” is scheduled to hit theaters on June 4, 2021.
