Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari are finalizing their divorce, but the process may have slowed down as reports say the estranged couple is fighting over the ownership of her Uncommon James brand.
The lifestyle and clothing brand was created by Cavallari, 34, while she was married to Cutler, 38, and was featured on the E! reality show "Very Cavallari." However, the former football quarterback is seeking 50% ownership of Uncommon James in their divorce, TMZ reported, citing an anonymous source close to the couple.
The source said that Cutler believes he is entitled to a stake in the company because Cavallari launched it while they were still married. However, the "Hills" alum reportedly doesn't feel that she owes her estranged husband anything, claiming Cutler didn't put any money into the company.
Cavallari insisted that she funded it without Cutler's help and is pushing back hard on his request, the insider added.
People and Us Weekly also confirmed through their own unnamed sources that Cutler is "fighting for half of the company," which includes beauty, jewelry, home and childrenswear.
Cavallari and Cutler tied the knot in 2013. She launched Uncommon James four years later in 2017.
It was not clear in the reports what Cutler's role was in starting the company. However, he was at the opening to support Cavallari because it was featured on her reality show.
Cutler's claim that he is a co-owner of the brand is not a surprise. In fact, Cavallari had already addressed this in multiple episodes of "Very Cavallari."
"He thinks he owns half of this company, and he does not. That is not on our non-existent prenup," Cavallari was quoted by Us Weekly as saying in an August 2018 episode.
In another episode that aired in March 2019, Cavallari also jokingly brought up the subject when she sent him to help her employees.
"Jay already thinks he owns half the company, so by me letting him go in, I’m potentially creating a monster," she said.
In the same episode, Cutler claimed that he worked in IT, shipping and designing. He also said that he served as a general consultant in the early days of Uncommon James. However, Cavallari shut down his claims, Us Weekly noted.
Cavallari and Cutler announced in April 2020 that they had parted ways because they were "growing apart." Many of their fans had not been surprised with their split, with some noting that the two "are complete opposites." Some of their friends reportedly were also not shocked because they saw his "shady side."
"Kristin and Jay’s split was not surprising at all to their friends. Their relationship always had its ups and downs and Kristin and those close to her thought that Jay had a shady side to him," an unnamed source told Us Weekly at the time.
