Kate Middleton is usually seen with a clutch bag and not handbag during her public engagements.

Her preference for smaller bags is something that she might have inherited from Princess Diana. Queen Elizabeth II, on the other hand, usually carries a handbag during her royal engagements.

On the online forum site Quora, one royal fan said that Middleton actually uses all types and sizes of bags when she’s out in public. But she has been using more clutch bags in recent weeks and months.

“She knows she is photographed from all angles and she probably prefers how she looks in her wardrobe when the look of the outfit isn’t interrupted in a photograph with the look of a handbag. She probably carried a handbag previously because it helped her feel normal, however, as she’s gained confidence in her role, she realized she’s not normal, exists in a fishbowl and now prefers to be photographed without the handbag appendage,” he said.

Rich Kahler, an avid reader of history and biographies, also said that there is no reason for the mom of three to carry a huge bag when she’s out in public because she doesn’t need much.

“Her engagements are, in a way, surgical strikes… She’s in and she’s out. At this point, she is accompanied by staff and/or a lady in waiting who probably assists her with items she may need,” he said.

Kahler raised another interesting point when he said that using a clutch bag gives Middleton the opportunity to choose who she wants and doesn’t want to shake hands with. There have been several photos showing Prince William’s wife holding her clutch bag in both of her hands. This kind of body language suggests that she doesn’t want to be approached or touched.

The royal fan said that Middleton uses her clutch bag the same way the Queen user her handbags, and that is to signal if she wants to continue or end a conversation.
