Kate Middleton will be the new Princess of Wales when Queen Elizabeth II dies and Prince Charles takes over the throne.

Prince Charles has to take over the throne after the current monarch. When the time comes, the Duke of Cambridge will inherit the Prince of Wales title, the $1.2 billion Duchy estate including the Duke of Cornwall title from the current heir apparent.

This will make Middleton more significant since she will take on the female version of the title – the Princess of Wales which is still strongly associated with Princess Diana. Camilla Parker Bowles is entitled to be called as such but declined to be styled that way to avoid upsetting the People’s Princess’ fans. If she wanted it, she could have it, but it was her choice not to be styled as such.

“If William is given the title by his dad when Charles is king, Kate will be Princess of Wales… simple as that,” royal expert Robert Jobson told Daily Star. “The reason Camilla didn’t take the title is exceptional, she was Charles’s mistress.”

Jobson noted that the title has nothing to do with Middleton, but she will only get it as Prince William’s wife. Also, it’s not automatic since it is seen as an “honor” to be given to the heirs to the throne.

The only way Middleton would be Princess of Wales is after Prince Charles give this honor to Prince William. Once the Duke of Cambridge becomes the official Prince of Wales, only then will Middleton become the Princess of Wales, too.

Robertson added that the title “Prince of Wales” is one of the great continuities of English, Welsh and British history. Only 21 men have held that coveted rank in the history and Prince Charles made it when he was only 10 years old.

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty Magazine, is also positive that Middleton will be Princess of Wales. He agreed that this will not automatically happen, but it will be inevitable.

“Yes, she will (become Princess of Wales), is the short answer,” Little said. “The process of William becoming Prince of Wales is not automatic but will surely happen.”
