Kate Middleton and Prince William endured several breakups before they eventually tied the knot.

According to “William and Kate: The Love Story: A Celebration of the Wedding of the Century” book author Robert Jobson, Middleton was more ready for marriage as she had “suffered heartache.” Middleton also suffered “public ignominy of a very public split with her prince in 2007.” Aside from that Jobson noted that “they had split up a couple of times before that too.”

“Every time the power of their love, like a magnet, had pulled them back to each other,” Jobson explained why Prince William and Middleton kept on getting back together after their splits.

In the book “The Duchess of Cambridge: How Kate Middleton Became A Future Queen,” Jessica Jayne said the couple had a trial separation. The Duke of Cambridge reportedly felt “claustrophobic” in their relationship at the time, so he flew to Greece with his friend Guy Pelly for some space and it left the duchess miserable.

Middleton reportedly never thought of Pelly highly. She felt that he was a “bad influence” on Prince William. Following their split, she let her guard down and spent time with her friends.

“She got quite drunk on white wine and really let her guard down. She was debating whether or not she should text or call him,” one of Middleton’s friends said. “She said how sad she was and how much she was missing William but she never mentioned it after that.”

During their engagement interview, the couple addressed their split. According to Prince William, they were very young when it happened and they were still figuring out what they wanted in their lives.

“We were both very young,” Prince William said. “It was at university, we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up.”

As for Middleton, she admitted that she was heartbroken at the time. But she added that it made her stronger.

“I think I at the time wasn’t very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person,” Middleton said. “You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised. Or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger.”
