  • He is also co-producing "Fatherhood"
  • The film was originally slated to release on April 16 in theaters

Actor Kevin Hart's new movie "Fatherhood" is set to premiere on Netflix on June 18, right before Father's Day.

The actor took to Instagram on Thursday to announce the release date of the upcoming drama, and shared a still from the movie featuring him and child artist Melody Hurd.

"Fatherhood will be dropping on @netflix June 18th....Can’t wait for you guys to see this amazing film," he wrote in the caption.

The film was originally slated to release on April 16 in theaters via Sony Pictures. However, due to the pandemic, 50% of theatres in the U.S. remain closed because of which the studio made a deal with Netflix.

"Fatherhood" is created under former United States President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground Productions. Dana Stevens, who had previously worked on "Safe Haven" and "City of Angels" has penned the film with Paul Weitz.

Hart, who is renowned for his comedic talents, will be seen in a different light in "Fatherhood."

The 41-year-old comedian will show off his serious acting skills in author Matthew Logelin’s adaptation that revolves around a widower, who raises his daughter. The film stars Anthony Carrigan, DeWanda Wise, Lil Rel Howery and Alfre Woodard in the key roles.

Hart is also co-producing "Fatherhood." The comedian took to Instagram to share his excitement in another post and noted that the film will release "right before Father's Day."

"This is a passion project...The movie is amazing....it gave me an opportunity to change the narrative on the “Black Father” stereotype," he wrote. "As a black father, I pride myself on trying to be as present as possible in my kids lives."

"I’m not the only black father that does this....there are so many of us. Seeing a film like Fatherhood is important as hell," he added. The comedian concluded the post by sharing how “huge” it is to work with former President Obama and his wife’s production company.

Meanwhile, "Fatherhood" is not the only film that Sony Pictures has offloaded due to the coronavirus pandemic. The studio has moved "Happiest Season" starring Kristen Stewart to Hulu and "An American Pickle" starring Seth Rogen to HBO Max, Variety reported.

Netflix has been negotiating deals actively including "The Trial of the Chicago 7," "My Little Pony," and "The Lovebirds."
