‘Krypton’ EP Says Syfy Series Will Introduce Characters That Aren’t Part Of Superman Canon
“Krypton” executive producer David S. Goyer revealed that some characters who will be appearing in the upcoming Syfy series are not part of the Superman canon.
In a recent interview with Den of Geek, Goyer explained that they decided to add unexpected characters to the Superman prequel series to make it more exciting especially for DC fans, who already know the ins and outs about the Man of Steel’s home planet.
“[‘Krypton’ features] a lot of other characters from the Superman canon, some of which have been linked to Krypton before, some of which haven’t, that are also included,” Goyer said. “[But] there are also some other DC Universe characters that aren’t specifically part of the Superman canon that will play a role.”

“We’re definitely doing some things that I think people won’t expect,” Goyer continued. “We’re making some unexpected additions to this Superman world that I’m excited for audiences to see.”
Although a lot of the “Krypton” characters are part of the Superman canon, Goyer assured fans that these characters will still be interesting to watch because their individual stories haven’t been fleshed out in the comics yet. “Even in the comic books, no one has ever said what the fate of Superman’s grandfather was, nor is the fate of any of the characters that we're introducing in the series known,” Goyer pointed out. “I think that’s a real positive in terms of dramatic storytelling. It’s not like we know character X will grow up to be hero Y.”
“We're introducing quite a few characters in the first season that DC readers will know about,” Goyer confirmed, “but the mantra with everyone involved is ‘don’t assume the wider audience will know who these characters are.’”
Developed by Goyer and Damian Kindler, “Krypton” is set two generations before the destruction of the titular home planet of Superman. It follows the story Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), Superman’s grandfather and the scion of the once-prosperous El family who was stripped of its rank after it failed to end tyranny. In the pilot, Seg-El lives in the planet’s lowest caste as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his planet from chaos.
In April, the first trailer for “Krypton” was released online, teasing the show’s debut in 2017. However, the following month, Syfy tweeted a debut of 2018.
More details about the new series are expected to be revealed during its panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 22.
