Meghan Markle Being Forced To Be Politically Neutral Could Be 'Real Problem'
Meghan Markle will have to keep her views to herself when she joins the British royal family.
On Monday, the "Suits" star and Prince Harry finally announced their engagement. According to The Guardian, Markle will have to be politically neutral when she ties the knot with Prince Harry, and this might be a problem in the future.
"You have to go back to Prince Philip to think of a recruit to the family who is so evidently feisty and spiky," said Robert Lacey, a historian and biographer of the monarch. "I can see that this is going to be a real problem in the months and years ahead for her, an existential problem. I don't imagine the Queen will be in a rush to have Meghan at Balmoral when Trump visits."
Markle has been open about her political views. In fact, she once used her celebrity status to support Hillary Clinton and attack Donald Trump. However, now that she's marrying Prince Harry and becoming a princess, she has to keep her opinions to herself. Palace protocols forbid royals from publicly sharing their views on political figures and parties.
"It's a bit like going in the goldfish bowl. Everything changes. What she was able to say before she came into 'the firm' is very different to what she is going to be able to say now. It all changes," said Dickie Arbiter, a former press secretary to Prince Charles. "Now she has come into the royal family, she will have to be politically neutral. Harry has probably made that perfectly clear. He knows she has been outspoken, but all that has to stop. She is going to have to adapt. I am sure she is on the road already."
Markle may have already accepted this. She has reportedly stopped using her social media accounts and even shut down her lifestyle blog, The Tig, shortly after she started dating Prince Harry.
Aside from putting aside her political views, Markle has decided to quit acting to be with Prince Harry. In fact, she just announced that she is officially leaving her hit legal drama TV series on USA Network, "Suits."
However, Prince Edward's ex, Ruthie Henshall, previously said she believes Markle should not have to give up her acting career. "It should be about love not duty and I think it [Harry and Meghan] could work and be rather wonderful," the five-time Olivier Award nominee said.
"It never would have been an option for me to do so — my career is my first love and is such an important part of who I am," Henshall explained. "I would have been unhappy."
