Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Accused Of ‘Destroying’ And ‘Cheapening’ Royal Family With Split
Since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in 2018, the couple has been criticized over their non-traditional decisions as members of the royal family. On Jan. 8, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed their plan to renounce their duties as senior royals in the new year.
On Saturday, Queen Elizabeth stated that she reached an agreement with Meghan and Harry regarding their wish to “step back” from their roles. However, the former “Suits” star’s father has accused the couple of ruining the royal family.
In an interview with Channel 5, Thomas Markle accused the Duke and Duchess of Sussex of harming the royal family’s public image. “When they got married, they took on an obligation, and the obligation is to be part of the Royals and to represent the Royals,” said.
“And it would be foolish for them not to. This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever. They are destroying it, they are cheapening it, making it shabby. They’re turning it into a Walmart with a crown on it now. It’s something that’s ridiculous; they shouldn’t be doing this.”
Markle also slammed his daughter for giving up a life other girls would appreciate. “With Meghan and Harry separating from the royals, it’s disappointing to me because she actually got every girl’s dream,” he said during the interview.
“Every young girl wanted to become a princess, and she got that, and now she’s tossing that away … it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.”
Markle went on to suggest that the couple was ungrateful for their life of privilege. “Apparently $3 million and a 26-bedroom home isn’t enough for them … It’s kind of embarrassing to me,” he added.
Despite his feelings, Queen Elizabeth has insisted the royal family is on good terms with Meghan and Prince Harry.
“Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved members of the family. I recognize the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life,” she stated in a press release.
