Prince Charles’ Proposal To Princess Diana Blamed To This Duke’s Ghost
Prince Charles proposed to Princess Diana due to a ghost that haunted the royal family.
Prince Charles stated publicly that 30 would be a good age to marry. However, he was nearly 33 and remained single that one royal biographer considered his quest for a wife a “national pastime.”
In Andrew Morton’s book “Diana: In Her Own Words,” the author stated that Prince Charles’ obligations and privileges were to find a suitable wife, marry her and produce an heir to the throne. Earl Mountbatten and Queen Elizabeth II had been endlessly talking about it. Prince Philip was also getting impatient with the future king’s “irresponsible approach to marriage.”
“The ghost of the Duke of Windsor [King Edward VIII] haunted the minds of the family, patently aware that the older he became the more difficult it would be to find a virginal, Protestant aristocrat to be his wife,” Morton said.
“The Prince, then nearly 33, had already made himself a hostage to fortune by declaring that 30 was a suitable age to settle down,” Princess Diana’s biographer added.
In Jessica Jayne’s tell-all book “The Duchess of Cornwall: Camilla's Story and Secrets,” the author disclosed that Prince Philip gave Prince Charles an ultimatum to propose to Princess Diana before her reputation was ruined. Prince Charles and Princess Diana would appear together on social occasions where Camilla Parker Bowles and her ex-husband Andrew Parker Bowles were present, too. The author added that the late Princess of Wales was growing anxious with Camilla’s presence.
Prince Charles admitted that he was terrified of making a promise and living to regret it afterward. However, the Duke of Edinburgh offered an arrangement with his son.
Princess Diana said in her secret interviews that Prince Philip promised Prince Charles that he could get back with Camilla if his marriage with Princess Diana failed after five years. Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom already felt that something was up in their marriage and she only confirmed it when it happened.
Many believed that Prince Charles was never over Camilla. They previously dated before their first marriage but the royal family ruled out the Duchess of Cornwall because they deemed her as an “experienced woman.”
