Prince William Broke Up With Kate Middleton Over The Phone In 2007, New Book Claims

Prince William and Kate Middleton briefly broke up in 2007, but a new book claims that the Duke of Cambridge split with her via a phone call.

In the book “Battle of Brothers,” historian and royal author Robert Lacey wrote that the then-25-year-old royal was “uncertain” about his future with Middleton, who was an accessories buyer at the time.

On April 11, 2007, Prince William called his girlfriend to break up with her, the book said. Middleton was at a Jigsaw meeting when she excused herself to take Prince William's call.

“She shut the door for more than an hour. When she came out, she was single,” the author wrote in an excerpt published by the Daily Mail.

Lacey added that Middleton didn’t want to be “seen defeated” after their split, thus “there were soon reports of William's 'ex' being sighted enjoying herself on the London party circuit.” Prince William got the message his former girlfriend wanted to send across, the author added.

Prince William, the book said, found it hard to date women after he broke up with Middleton, particularly because “a surprising number of young women from his circle turned him down flat.” More than this, he missed her family, the author wrote.

“One pillar of William's year at Sandhurst had been his regular Friday night escapes to Bucklebury, where he could collapse and be mothered by Carole — and also fathered by the quiet and affectionate Michael who, whisper it, could provide a better ear for confidences, on some issues, than Prince Charles,” Lacey wrote.

Just over 10 weeks after their split, Prince William and Middleton were spotted kissing and dancing at a party at his barracks in Bovington, Dorset, in the U.K.

This was the second time the couple had broken up. In 2004, Prince William and Middleton also split, with the Duke of Cambridge later revealing in an ITV News interview, “We were both very young… We were both finding ourselves as such.”

The love birds met at St. Andrews University as students and clicked. However, Prince William allegedly really noticed Middleton when she walked the runway wearing a see-through dress for charity.

Prince William and Middleton got engaged in 2010 and tied the knot the following year. They now have three kids, Princes Louis and George and Princess Charlotte.

Lacey has also written biographies about Queen Elizabeth II, Henry Ford and Eileen Ford and works as a historian for Netflix's “The Crown.”
