What is the most popular Halloween costume in your state? Reuters

Going on Google to find the answer to your Halloween costume question is a no-brainer -- but what are people searching for? While you may expect "Elsa" or "Frozen" to top the list for nearly every state, it turns out people would rather be Katniss Everdeen or the ever-popular banana.

That's right: When breaking down Halloween costume searches by state, Silk found a three-way tie between Katniss, Black Widow and banana as the most popular terms. There was no clear costume trend in the searches, 19 states had unique terms, so chances are if there was a hypothetical Halloween party, with all 50 states invited, there would only be a few embarrassing moments when you see your banana doppelganger across the room.

Connecticut, Delaware Maryland and Minnesota were the states where the banana costume reigned supreme. Katniss ruled searches in Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan and Ohio. Black Widow was the most popular Halloween costume in Missouri, North Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin. While "Frozen" became a cultural, and global, phenomenon, that popularity was only reflected in New Jersey, searching for "Elsa Frozen," and Virginia, searching for "Anna Frozen."

While we wait until 2016 to see the battle between Superman and Batman play out in theaters, the Caped Crusader earned an early victory over the Man of Steel based on Halloween costume searches. Batman was the most popular costume search in Oklahoma, Tennessee and West Virginia while Superman was nowhere to be found. A minion Halloween costume was also quite popular; topping searches in Iowa and Kansas.

All the focus may be on the most popular Halloween costume ideas; there are some states that must be applauded for their weird searches. Take the Internet creation of Slender Man, the most popular Halloween costume search in Pennsylvania. The bit of Internet folklore has no connection to the state but people really want to dress up as a rather tall individual with a blank face dressed in a suit. North Dakota probably wins Halloween with their selection of Care Bear as the state's most popular costume search.

A state-by-state breakdown does not cover the full scope of Halloween. The National Retail Federation conducted their own Halloween costume survey and "Frozen" will top the list for children's Halloween costumes while witches rule for adults. Americans love Halloween and the NRF predicts they will spend$7.4 billion in 2014.
