‘Salem’ Season 3 Recap: What Happened In Episode 7? [SPOILER] Dies In ‘The Man Who Was Thursday’
WGN America TV series “Salem” returned in 2017 with a bang. Season 3, episode 7, which aired Wednesday, kicked off right where episode 6 left off with Mary Sibley (Janet Montgomery) plotting to take down the devil (Oliver Bell) using Sebastian Marburg (Joe Doyle).
Here’s what happened in “The Man Who Was Thursday”:
Mary Asks Sebastian To Finally Choose
After sleeping with Sebastian on John Alden’s (Shane West) bed, Mary again asks him how he plans to escape the devil’s clutches. His plan is simple: Run. But Mary cannot leave Salem because her life is tied to the primordial tree. Sebastian thinks the Essex witches only fed her a lie to keep her in Salem, but when he transports her outside the city with a kiss, she starts suffocating to death. Fortunately, he is able to transport her back to the house in time.
With Sebastian realizing that he cannot flee with Mary, she asks him to finally choose between her and the devil. After all, it is about time “Salem” fans learn where his loyalties truly lie.
In episode 7, Mary writes a letter to John that she begs Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel) to deliver. She also learns that Cotton is going to be a father.
Speaking of Cotton’s child, the priest is shocked to see his wife Anne Hale’s (Tamzin Merchant) bulging belly so soon. It’s only been a week since she got pregnant. Anne lies to him that her witch’s blood is hastening the life inside of her. Clever lie!
Isaac Has Become Very Popular
Elsewhere in Knocker’s Hole, Isaac (Iddo Goldberg) the Truth Teller is becoming popular with the poor people. He gives a passionate speech about cleaning the streets of Knocker’s Hole and being free of Puritan hypocrisy. He wants the poor people to be ruled by their own rules, not the rules made by the privileged.
It isn’t long before Isaac becomes the unofficial magistrate of Knocker’s Hole.
Anne Hale Gets Rid Of Gloriana
While Cotton delivers Mary’s letter to John, Anne tries to get rid of Gloriana. She wipes out all her memories and gives her a bruise in one of her eyes. However, the black demon keeps haunting her. Surprisingly, when she wipes Gloriana’s memory, Anne becomes this black demon.
Cotton’s wife then visits Mercy Lewis (Elise Eberle) in order to give her Gloriana. She wants Gloriana to work as prostitute in Mercy’s nest.
Mercy takes one look at Gloriana and immediately realizes what Anne did to her because she can feel her empty womb. Nevertheless, she takes the poor woman in and tells Anne that she owes her a favor for “cleaning up her mess.”
The Devil Is Dead?
Remember Tituba (Ashley Madekwe) asked John to forge a dagger with a special ingredient that she gave him? John pays a blacksmith to leave his shop and gets to work. He forges the dagger, but when he does it, his thoughts inevitably go to the things Mary did in order to win Sebastian’s trust and love. He simply can’t get the images out of his head.
Fun fact: John can’t read. Cotton reads Mary’s letter to the Captain in which she informs him that the attack on Salem will come from inside the town.
Later in “Salem” Season 3, episode 10, Sebastian goes to the devil and tells him that he betrayed him. He plotted to kill him with Mary. The devil is angry but Sebastian begs for mercy. He also suggests that he kill the Essex witches once and for all since they are the ones who are plotting his death with the help of Mary. It looks like he’s chosen the devil’s side. But, wait there’s a twist!
Sebastian and the devil meet the Essex witches at their hive in the forest. Then, Sebastian changes sides and joins the Essex witches. It turns out that he tricked the devil into coming to the forest. The primordial tree quickly wraps its roots around Mary’s son.
In a brilliant move, all of the Essex witches sacrifice their lives in order to give their powers to Mary. Once she has their powers, she tears her son’s limbs apart. It seems like he’s dead … or not?
Towards the end of the episode, a woman (maybe Tituba?) wraps his body (including his torn limbs) in a bag and takes off.
Once the deed is done, Mary and Sebastian head back to the house. Alden sees the two clutching each other and burns her love letter because he can’t get over the fact that she slept with him.
“Salem” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on WGN America.
