Jimmi Simpson had the time of his life playing young William in the first season of HBO’s sci-fi series, “Westworld.” But during the finale, it was revealed that his character eventually grew up to become the mysterious Man in Black played by Ed Harris.

Given this huge reveal, there is no need for Simpson to reprise his role next season. It’s sad thinking that the idealistic William will no longer be around in the Western theme park, but Simpson understands how important his absence will be moving forward.

“We now know the finish line for this man so I don’t know if there’s enough story to show. But I could see some interesting ways to bring him back. Like the corporate takeover, or his other heartbroken visits to the park. But I’d never suggest they just stick William in for no reason,” he told Gold Derby.

Should he stick around, Simpson toyed around with the idea that “maybe William shows up as a host and has a scene with Ed.”

Simpson is actually more excited about Dolores Abernathy’s (Evan Rachel Wood) storyline unfolding next season. Aside from the Man in Black reveal, the other shocker during the season finale is that Dolores is actually the villain named Wyatt whom other hosts were terrified of. “The writers have told me that they know this story very well. I’m mostly invested in Dolores, cause I think she stands for so many things,” he said.

Wood already told Entertainment Weekly earlier that Dolores will be quite different next season, and it’s all because of the revelation she learned during the season finale. “I’m really curious to see the unleashed version of her that we caught a glimpse of at the very end of the finale,” she said. “Those final seconds, I think we were seeing a completely different side to her, completely different programming and completely off of her leash, so I don’t think she will be the same person; she’ll be an evolved version.”

As for Jeffrey Wright, he believes that his character Bernard Lowe will be given a meatier role next season, especially after the death of his boss, Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins). “There’s this suggestion that Bernard is the captain now. So there’s a lot to be explored next year,” he told The Daily Beast.

It was revealed after a couple of episodes that Bernard is actually a host created by Ford based on the physical likeness of his former partner, Arnold Weber. Wright was able to correctly guess this twist while they were shooting the pilot, but for Season 2, he’d rather keep quiet about his speculations.

“I’ve got a lot of speculation but none I’d like to share,” he laughingly said. “Because I’ve learned over the last couple of years after working with Jona and Lisa that you can presume all you want but they’re way on the other side of the curb from you.”

“Westworld” Season 2 premieres on HBO in 2018.
