Why ‘Avengers’ Fans Think Peggy Carter Is In ‘Infinity War’ Sequel
Death doesn’t mean much in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even though Peggy Carter died in “Captain America: Civil War” last year, fans know that she could come back. Many believe actress Hayley Atwell has been hinting at her return on Instagram.
The latest “clue” is Atwell’s location. “Sunny afternoon in Georgia,” she wrote with a picture of a sugary drink and the book “The Love Story Behind Gone With The Wind.” The photo was posted Monday, and as Marvel followers know, “Avengers 4” is currently shooting in Atlanta.
Atwell, who will star in next year’s “Howard’s End” on Starz, has also been hanging out with some Marvel MVPs. She posted some photo booth prints on Instagram earlier this month with Vision actor Paul Bettany, Maria Hill actress Coby Smulders and “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi. She used the hashtag “#marvelreunionparty” in her caption.
Another photo booth opportunity was taken with Louis D’Esposito, co-president of Marvel Studios. He was an executive producer not only on “Agent Carter” TV show but also all of the Marvel movies, including “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers 4.” “Louis D’Esposito, the man who championed Agent Carter. What a guy,” the actress wrote.
A snapshot of Atwell in the hair and makeup process from last month also made Peggy lovers excited. The curlers indicate that Atwell’s hair was going to be put into a style fitting of the 1940s. The dots on her face are for special effects. They’re used whenever Peggy is aged the way she was in “Ant-Man” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
Does this all mean that Peggy Carter will be back on the big screen? Well, not really. The actress actually commented on that last photo with the motion capture dots. “I’m filming Christopher Robin,” she wrote in the comments section. Atwell plays Christopher Robin’s wife in the Disney flick, due out in August 2018.
Also, it seems unlikely that Atwell would drop so many hints on Instagram. Even if Marvel didn’t mind her leaving teasers on social media, the posts can be explained. Running into other Marvel employees isn’t that strange, and Georgia is home to many film and TV sets right now.
Still, the return of Peggy Carter can’t be completely ruled out. No one knows what is going to happen in “Avengers: Infinity War” (due out May 4, 2018) or its 2019 sequel. Comic book readers know that there could be plenty of death and resurrection in the movies.
Many fans are hoping for an Agent Carter appearance in “Captain Marvel” in March 2019. The movie is set to take place in the 1990s, well before Peggy’s death. She appeared in an “Ant-Man” flashback, so there’s no reason she can’t be in Brie Larson’s superhero flick.
While we likely won’t have any definitive answers about a potential Peggy Carter cameo for a while, fans can rest easy knowing that Atwell is always up for reprising the role.
“Yes, I’d love that, and I love Brie Larson — I’d be well up for that,” Atwell told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour in July (via Nerdist). “I think, you know, because she dies at the age of 96, she lives quite a long time — so I could be employed forever.”
