When Princess Diana shared details of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles’ affair with the world, she infuriated the royal family. As a result, the monarchy reportedly went above and beyond to tear down their new enemy.

During her interview with Martin Bashir in 1995, Diana shared the challenges that her marriage with Charles faced as well as other private matters with the royal family. While the interview gave new information to the people about the Prince of Wales, it also put a target on his wife’s back.

In the book “Tony & Cherie Blair: A Special Relationship,” author Paul Scott revealed Princess Diana told him the royal family treated her like an “enemy” after the interview.

“Visits abroad were blocked and letters were lost when I became seen as a problem – the enemy was my husband’s department,” he wrote.

Diana’s decision to give the interview without warning Queen Elizabeth only caused further strain on her relationship with Charles’ family. “The reaction from the Palace is that she has let the Queen down – and that has come across loud and clear.”

Although Prince Charles and Princess Diana were separated at the time of her interview, Scott suggested her claims “made her a figure of undiluted hate in the royal household.”

Shortly after the interview, Queen Elizabeth encouraged the estranged spouses to end their marriage for good.

Charles and Diana finalized their divorce in 1996, the Prince of Wales went on to marry Camilla in 2005.
