A 65-year-old man in India was arrested for allegedly raping a female dog multiple times.

The man, who has not been identified, was arrested Sunday after the act was caught on camera. The accused, who lives in the Pune district in the western state of Maharashtra, had been abusing the canine since October 2020. He used to perform the act in the parking area of a residential society in the city, the Times of India reported.

People who lived nearby and a non-profit organization named RESQ charitable trust learned about the sexual abuse, and, to gather proof, installed CCTV cameras in the area.

“We needed proper eyewitnesses, evidence to catch him and have a solid case. On day three of tracking him, he was finally caught on footage walking suspiciously toward the dog, picking her up in his arms and carrying it inside a secluded parking lot. He was then caught in the act on camera," RESQ Charitable Trust’s founder and president Neha Panchamia told the Times of India.

The volunteers for the non-profit alerted the police, and handed over the video and photographs of the elderly man raping the dog. The police arrested the man and registered a case under Section 377 (unnatural sex) of the Indian Penal Code. The dog is under RESQ Charitable Trust’s care, media outlet Times Now News reported.

In a similar incident in the state earlier this month, a 67-year-old man was arrested for sexually abusing a female stray dog. The arrest was made after an animal welfare organization submitted a video to the police, which showed the man raping the canine. "The accused Ahmed Shahi, who resides alone, used to commit such crimes. In the past, the local residents had warned him against doing so," a senior official from a nearby police precinct told the media at the time. Vijay Mohnani of Bombay Animal Rights said the accused was a vegetable vendor in the area. Based on the evidence, the police arrested the accused under Section 377 (unnatural sex).
