Chris Messina’s Danny Will Return For ‘The Mindy Project’ Season 6
Chris Messina will officially return for “The Mindy Project” Season 6.
However, the actor’s character, Danny, won’t be part of all 10 episodes. While at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday, July 27, executive producer and cast member Mindy Kaling made the surprise announcement. In the Hulu sitcom, Danny and Mindy Lahiri (Kaling) decided to go their separate ways after dating for quite some time.

According to Kaling, Danny’s return guarantees that he will reunite with Mindy. However, this does not mean that everything will go back to how they were before. “We’re not interested in tying everything up in a bow. We’re trying to avoid that, while also leaving the audience with the sense that Mindy has some growth. Happily ever after can sometimes be romantic happiness, but it also can be a feeling of contentment about your life as a professional person and as a mother,” she said (via TV Line).
“The Mindy Project” executive producer Matt Warburton promised to fans that they will immediately learn where Danny and Mindy stand in each other’s lives. But Kaling reminded everyone that both Danny and Mindy are now married to other people. “So we went into the final season with that complication, which is fun and delicious,” the actress said.
Other than Messina, other fan favorites from the series will also return for the sixth and final season of “The Mindy Project.” This includes Jay and Mark Duplass, who played the roles of Duncan and Brendan, respectively. Adam Pally, who left “The Mindy Project” in 2015, will also return as Peter, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Meanwhile, “Modern Family” cast member Julie Bowen will be appearing in one episode of “The Mindy Project” in Season 6. The actress will play the role of a rival mother who will mommy-shame the lead character.
In other news, since “The Mindy Project” will soon be wrapping up, there are rumors that a spinoff could be possible in the coming years. However, Kaling said that this isn’t part of their plans. “The decision to end was ours. We have such a good finale we’ve known about it for a while,” she said.
“The Mindy Project” Season 6 will premiere on Hulu on Sept. 12.
