The Afghan government made a deal with the Taliban to exchange three senior Taliban figures for the Australian and American professors who were taken hostage in Kabul in 2016. The deal was intended to make way for peace talks between the US government and the insurgents and to eventually form a truce.
In exchange, Afghanistan will release three Taliban figures, including the younger brother of the leader of the Haqqani network.
